Origin of low sodium capacity in graphite and generally weak substrate binding of Na and Mg among alkali and alkaline earth metals.

چکیده
It is well known that graphite has a low capacity for Na but a high capacity for other alkali metals. The growing interest in alternative cation batteries beyond Li makes it particularly important to elucidate the origin of this behavior, which is not well understood. In examining this question, we find a quite general phenomenon: among the alkali and alkaline earth metals, Na and Mg generally have the weakest chemical binding to a given substrate, compared with the other elements in the same column of the periodic table. We demonstrate this with quantum mechanics calculations for a wide range of substrate materials (not limited to C) covering a variety of structures and chemical compositions. The phenomenon arises from the competition between trends in the ionization energy and the ion-substrate coupling, down the columns of the periodic table. Consequently, the cathodic voltage for Na and Mg is expected to be lower than those for other metals in the same column. This generality provides a basis for analyzing the binding of alkali and alkaline earth metal atoms over a broad range of systems.

Comparison of Catalytic Effect of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals Hydrogen Sulfate: As the Promoter for an Efficient Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones under Solvent-Free Conditions
Alkali and alkaline earth metals hydrogen sulfate catalyzed the one-pot three component condensation reactions of aldehydes, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and urea or thiourea under solvent-free conditions leading to 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones in high yields at 80 °C. Our results showed that Biginelli reaction not only is pH dependent, but the cation of catalyst plays an importan...
متن کاملON THE COMPLEXING ABILITY OF ERIOCHROME BLACK T AS A METALLOCHROMIC INDICATOR FOR SOME ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH CATIONS IN ACETONE AND DIMETHYLSULPHOXIDE SOLUTIONS
The interaction between eriochrome black T and Li , Na , K ,Mg and Ca ions in acetone and dimethylsulphoxide solutions has been investigated spectrophotometrically. The formation constants of the resulting 1 : 1 complexes were determined and found to decrease in the order Mg >Ca >Li >K >Na in both solvents used. There is an inverse relationship between the stabilities of the complexes...
متن کاملIon exchanged vermiculites with lower expansion onset temperatures
South African Palabora vermiculite was modified by ion exchange with ammonium and selected alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. In the exchanged vermiculite with ammonium ions, it was found that ammonia and water were the blowing agents and they were simultaneously released during thermal degradation. In the increasing ionic potential series: Na, Ba, Ca and Mg, it was found that the onse...
متن کاملThe superconducting proximity effect as a tool to investigate metal films and interfaces
The superconducting proximity effect is measured in sandwiches of thin Pb films and the alkali metals Cs, Rb, K and Na. The Tc-dependence provides information about the interface barriers between Pb and the alkalis. Such a barrier is particularly large in Pb/Cs sandwiches. It is not due to impurities or oxydation. In the presence of a sufficiently strong barrier a special form of the Cooper lim...
متن کاملBond-length distributions for ions bonded to oxygen: alkali and alkaline-earth metals
Bond-length distributions have been examined for 55 configurations of alkali-metal ions and 29 configurations of alkaline-earth-metal ions bonded to oxygen, for 4859 coordination polyhedra and 38 594 bond distances (alkali metals), and for 3038 coordination polyhedra and 24 487 bond distances (alkaline-earth metals). Bond lengths generally show a positively skewed Gaussian distribution that ori...
